The ubiquitous banana bread. There it is: at every potluck, every play date, and every breakfast party. But many of these banana breads come from a box. Don’t get me wrong, I was raised on boxed everything, and they are great in a pinch, but they don’t come close to the flavor or […]

Why is it that that every few months, it seems we are looking for another good babysitter? We don’t move every few months, our children aren’t hyenas, we’re (relatively) clean, and we get along well with our sitters. Could it be that, um, all sitters around here are students whose class schedules change every three […]

I read an article the other day about EcoMoms. The day prior to that, a friend e-mailed me a link to EcoMom Alliance. I think the website is well done and helpful. I think the idea behind EcoMoms is brilliant and more important than I allow myself to think.
Though I think it is easy […]

Ok, so about a year ago we went to a fundraiser for the wonderful Agassiz Preschool and saw a bunch of great performers. That school definitely has a wealth of talented parents! A real standout, though was Tim Gearan, who plays excellent bluegrassy singer-songwriter stuff, and his band has the chops to keep things from […]

You may have heard this week that Popular Science rated Cambridge number six on its list of America’s 50 greenest cities.
Don’t rest on your Cantabrigian laurels though (unless of course you plan to compost them) — you can get your green on that much more by checking out the chic eco-friendly offerings at Greenward, marking […]

Another really amazing thing about Cambridge is the poetry here. This morning I am really wanting some poetry — so I thought I’d offer up one of my favorites. It got me through a time in my own life — having small children and juggling the elements of woman, of mommy etc…
It sounds silly […]

Yesterday in the car, my youngest son, Blake, asked, Why isn’t it great that it’s so warm, mommy? I don’t remember doing it, but I must have told him that the warm weather was creeping me out. So what can you say — something, quick something, that will both allow a child of five to […]
